On a recent sultry day, the Jamaica Minnesota Organization celebrated Jamaica's Independence Day at the Radisson Plaza in Minneapolis with jerk chicken, reggae music and a fashion show.

The organization, which started in 1992 to bring Jamaican families together, has expanded its role to promote the island nation as a tourist destination.

"It's one of the best places to be in the winter," said Peter Knight, one of the group's founders.

The midsummer gathering provided an opportunity to bring together the group's network in the Twin Cities.

"We want to showcase the heritage of Jamaica in Minnesota," said Karlene Silvera, chairwoman of the organization's board.

For the first time, this year's gala featured a runway show with clothing by Uzuri International Designs, a Jamaican label designed in part by Mark McDermoth, currently a St. Paul resident. The show included full-length gowns more suited to a pageant than a beach vacation. It seems glamour is an international language, after all.
