I'm not one to get all hot and bothered by the latest electronic gadgets. But after several frustrating experiences trying to download music and podcasts on an MP3 player, Mr. Kablog bought me an iPod Touch for my birthday in June. Yes, it was expensive, but the gift came along with an edict that he is no longer my personal listening device tech-support guy.

In the past month, I've gone crazy downloading free and cheap applications, as well as money-themed podcasts. And I'm finding that some of these applications make tasks such as grocery shopping and tracking spending a breeze.

The Wall Street Journal recently had a post about the best iPod applications for money management.

I thought I'd share a few of my faves below. I hope you'll add your must have collection of financial apps as well.

I use Mint.com, a free online site for tracking your finances. The site's iPod app made it on the WSJ list, and I agree that it's handy to pull it up and get an up-to-the-minute glance at the state of your credit card and bank account balances. But I wish the tool were sophisticated enough for me to categorize my purchases straight from my phone. The smart site does a pretty good job categorizing McDonalds as a restaurant and Cub Foods as a grocery store, but it sometimes goofs. I'd love to take five minutes here and there to make quick fixes.

Here are some others on my device.

eZ Price Grab (free) Know when a sale's a sale. This tool is handy dandy when trying to decide whether the warehouse brand tissues are still cheaper than the Kleenex with the coupon. Enter the price and quantity of an item an it spits out unit price.

Shopper (.99) Also in the "know when a sale's a sale" category. This is probably my most-used app. Make lists for different stores and keep track of coupons and prices. I know the app, which can sort items by aisle, is even cooler than I think it is. Definitely worth taking a look. Also curious to see what other grocery list apps readers like. I'm also surprised that I've yet to add a coupon-related tool on my device. Any suggestions?

Gift Planner (free) This tool, powered by Chase, organizes your gift-giving. You can jot down gift ideas when you're at the mall, set budgets for gift giving and keep track of who you bought a present for and how much you spent. I've yet to use the feature because I haven't purchased a gift in the past month, but I think it'll come in handy, especially for those of us who tend to buy gifts year-round when we see a deal.

Bloomberg (free) Track stocks, look up quotes and watch market moves.

My wish list? A way to take your printed or clipped coupons and scan them onto my Touch so I can stop heading to the store with fistfuls of paper.

I'd also love an app that would aggregate my shopping lists and find the best price for me at a handful of stores based on weekly sales and the coupons in my coffer.
