Q We have an infant car seat we bought in 2003. It has two base units that we used for both of our children. It is in perfect condition and has never been in an accident, but I know people are advised not to buy used car seats, so I don't know if I could sell it at a tag sale or give it away. The whole system is made of plastic, so I don't want this to go in a landfill. Do you have any idea what to do with this?

A Car seats are difficult to re-use or recycle. Many typical outlets won't take them because space may be an issue, according to Kristin Pierskalla at Hennepin County Environmental Services. In addition, they'd need to be able to ensure the seats are in good condition and meet safety standards.

Leather sofa care Q We have a grape-colored leather couch and love seat. How do we clean and condition them?

A It's always best to follow the manufacturer's care instructions. If you don't have them, contact the retailer. If that's not possible, here are some general leather cleaning and care tips:

Uncoated leather: Frequent dusting is the only way to clean most leathers with limited surface protection. An art-gum eraser may remove ordinary dirt. The uncoated surface readily absorbs liquids and oily substances. Stains may be impossible to remove. For the same reason, leather creams may create blotches.

Coated leathers: These leathers resist staining. Occasionally wash with a mild soap (such as castile) and water, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and buff dry. If desired, use leather cream once or twice a year.

Do not use oils, furniture polishes, or varnishes on leather because these products may contain solvents that can make the leather sticky.
