With Wayzata returning only four experienced players from its back-to-back Class 2A championship boys' tennis teams, coach Jeff Prondzinski anticipated a few missteps on the road to an attempted three-peat.

The Trojans stepped in one of those holes Friday, losing to a determined Lakeville North team 4-3. It was their first loss of the year, but Prondzinski thinks it might not be their last.

"We've got a target on our backs, and Lakeville North came to play," Prondzinski said. "We had a big victory over Maple Grove the day before and we just weren't ready. We've got some talent, but we just don't have the experience yet. We could lose 10 matches this year."

Wayzata traveled to suburban Milwaukee to play Saturday in the Brookfield East Invitational, an individual tournament hosted by Wisconsin's top boys' high school tennis program that draws teams from across the Midwest.

As an individual tournament, no team scores were kept, but Wayzata fared well. Junior Nick Beaty, the defending Class 2A singles champion, lost a third-set tiebreaker in the finals of the top singles bracket to Brookfield East's David Horneffer, who is ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin. The Trojans' No. 1 doubles duo of Steele Kowalchyk and Nick Kasner had an identical result, losing to a team from the host school in the doubles final.

"I think that experience was huge," Prondzinski said. "It's a steppingstone for us. We didn't know the players or the teams, we weren't playing names. We were just playing tennis. It was a great lesson for a young team."

Worth noting

• The top team for the Northern Lights Junior Olympic volleyball club, the 18-1s, took third place in the 19-Under division at the prestigious Memorial Ferruccio Cornacchia international tournament in Pordenone, Italy.

Northern Lights, which includes 10 players from the Twin Cities metropolitan area, lost to eventual champion Argentario Trento (Italy) in the semifinals but rallied to defeat Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany) in the third-place match.
