Amazing insects land at the Arb

Gigantic bugs are invading the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's lush landscape this summer.

But these insects are harmless and fun to look at. Artist David Rogers has sculpted 12 supersized replicas of a grasshopper, daddy longlegs, ants, assassin bug and other creatures from natural materials such as willow and black walnut.

The "Big Bugs" will be on display from June 18 through Sept. 30 at the arboretum in Chaska. Kids are especially fascinated by his creations, said Rogers, who has trucked the exhibit to many botanical gardens across the U.S. and last appeared at the arboretum in 2003. "I've heard parents call the praying mantis a cricket," he said. "Kids will correct them. They get it."

During the grand opening June 18-19, visitors can go on a Bug Hunt, Insect Safari and search the bog for bugs. Many "Big Bugs" classes and programs for all ages are scheduled throughout the exhibit's run.

Admission is $12 for ages 13 and up, free for ages 12 and under. Free for University of Minnesota students and arboretum members. Go to arboretum.umn.edu/bigbugs.aspx.
