C.J.: In his Dudley Do-Right way, B Right showers baby with street duds

January 29, 2008 at 2:31AM

B Right, there's something wrong about burnishing Baby Dominic's street cred when he's not even due until March 13.

A baby shower for Miss Shannan, B96 FM Sunday morning show host and director of marketing and public affairs, was held Sunday at Marla's Indian & Caribbean Cuisine on Bloomington Avenue S. (although at least one guest went to the other Minneapolis location on Lake Street).

Apparently one side effect of inviting men who work at an urban radio station to a baby shower is B Right's contribution. First there was the effusive applause from B Right, a morning show co-host, as his gift was opened by Miss Shannan and her husband, Conor, a plumber. Inside was "Timberland gear," which B Right purchased with the guidance of his sister D Right, who is not on the air but hates having her name, Daune (pronounced Dawn), misspelled. "A whole little outfit. Timbo shirt, the pants and the little booties," B Right said. "And the vest, too. Streetwear. That's for the streets for when he [hangs] out. [He's] got to be ready. Just for the baby because, you know, Conor is from over North."

The shower brought out B Right's softer side, too. He modeled the baby's blanket handmade by Conor's mom, Paula.

And then there was what Miss Shannan labeled "the inappropriate ahhhhhing" by B Right.

"Leave me alone. You know dudes don't go to showers; never been to no shower. Let me express me," B Right said, pounding his chest.

Miss Shannan's half-hearted complaint about B Right's gift was: "Why [do] you want make him so hard? So gangsta?"

Afterward, Miss Shannan added: "I think it's nice Dominic will have a variety of people influencing him." That's what she says now.

State of adolescence President Bush should have been safe from the clutches and kisses of Rep. Michele Bachmann at Monday night's State of the Union Address.

A call to her D.C. office Monday morning to find out whether she was already over at the Cap staking out a position so she could grab onto W brought "Rich, Michele's chief of staff" to the phone.

"Are you a political reporter?" Rich asked.

Somedays. "Well, I can tell you that Michele actually doesn't even arrive until this evening in D.C., so she probably won't be there until the last second," Rich said. Great. We don't need to see another display of adult onset puberty from Bachmann, bouncing around as though she's at a rock concert, placing her hand on W's shoulder until he acknowledged her, and kissing the Prez.

W's Secret Service detail probably kept an eye on Bachmann anyhow.

Swing without the bling "I guess I like the music of Glenn Miller and Gershwin tunes," cooed Marjorie Johnson.

She's going to fit right in with the crowd at the 2008 Grammys.

"Tonight Show" staffers have booked Jay Leno's favorite senior correspondent Marjorie Johnson to cover one of the music industry's big nights in February.

She doesn't have any bling, or whatever hipsters are calling gawdy jewelry now. "No, I'm not wearing anything like that, but I am wearing my signature outfit: a red dress," Johnson said. "If they have the big bling on, I'll comment on theirs, but, no, I like the small stuff. I guess because I'm small, small things appeal to me, except for my husband [Lee]. He's six feet."

And she'll be showing off her legs this time. "My best feature. I do have good legs from the knees down," she said. "Forget it from the knees up."

This red dress will be the a short version of the gown she wore when Leno had her cover the Emmys: "My daughter, when she was out shopping at the Mall of America Nordstrom, saw that same dress and it was reduced $100, so that was good. We both like it better shorter. It's cute. The skirt sort of swings."

Like that Miller music.

Baking with Jay A last-minute booking has Marjorie Johnson scheduled to be on "The Tonight Show" tonight.

After we talked about her Grammys assignment, she got a call from Jay Leno's people to fly out and bake something with Jay from her first cookbook, "The Road to Blue Ribbon Baking with Marjorie."
