The leadership of the tiny Libertarian Party of Minnesota wants to make it clear they oppose the marriage and photo id constitutional amendments.

Both, they say, would "expand government control." The party's 11 member executive committee voted unanimously to oppose the two amendments.

"We...support a free society, where 1% can still be free to live their own lives as choose, even if 99% might disapprove. Furthermore, we call upon legislators to expand liberty by repealing the existing statutory gay marriage ban," the party said of the amendment that would define marriage.

"It is up to the state to use their existing systems properly; enacting Voter ID is not the answer," the party said of the amendment to require voters present photo identification when they vote.

The strong statements may not have much impact. None of the members of the House or Senate belong to the Libertarian Party and it didn't run a gubernatorial candidate last year. IN 2008, the party's candidate won 0.32 percent of Minnesotans' vote in the presidential election.
