Getting there: Four ferries serve Isle Royale in summer. For Minnesotans, the logical choice is the Grand Portage-Isle Royale Transportation Line. Adult fares begin at $59 for a one-way passage. The Voyageur II will be operating daytrips on Fridays this summer. Reservations are a must (www.isleroyaleboats.com; 1-218-475-0024 or 1-888-746-2305).

Lodging: Campgrounds offer tent sites and screened-in shelters. For those who want a bed, there is one option: The Rock Harbor Lodge and Marina. A night with three meals for two costs $515 in peak season; $316 without the meals (www.rockharborlodge. com; 1-906-337-4993).

More info: Isle Royale National Park is closed from Nov. 1 to April 16. For more information on the park, go to www.nps.gov/isro.
