Authorities have identified the 19-year-old man who was run over by a big truck and killed early Tuesday while on Interstate 494 in South St. Paul.
Samuel J. Oden, of Edina, was hit about 2:20 a.m. along the freeway near the Concord Street exit about 2:20 a.m., according to the State Patrol.
"For [an] unknown reason," Oden was in westbound I-494 as a pedestrian when he was struck by a semitrailer truck, the patrol said in a statement.
At least one other semi was involved in the crash, the patrol added.
The drivers of the trucks, a 57-year-old man from Coon Rapids and a 63-year-old man from Hammond, Wis., were not hurt.
Oden played hockey for four seasons in Faribault, Minn., at Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school. This past season, the defenseman played junior hockey in Canada, most recently for Rayside-Balfour Canadians in northern Ontario and was expected to return to the team this fall.
