The ramp from southbound I-35W to Hiawatha Avenue is closed 24 hours a day through Saturday, something that caught many commuters off guard Tuesday.

The closure led to backups on 35W that during the morning rush extended back to near the Hwy. 280 interchange and also slowed traffic on westbound Hwy. 36.

MnDOT officials say commuters can still reach Hiawatha Avenue by taking Exit 17B, which provides access to westbound I-94, 11th Avenue and Hwy. 55.

The closure is signed as such directing motorists to follow the detour signs; however, those who miss the signs will have to find an alternate route as the detour occurs prior to the closure, said spokesman Nick Carpenter.

On another note, there will be various overnight lane and ramp closures on the interstate this week below the new westbound I-94 bridge/ramp to 7th Street that is currently being built.
