Want to have less lawn this growing season? Paul and Susan Damon offer these suggestions:

Getting rid of grass: "We've tried every method," Paul said. "Our favorite is a sod-cutter. It's the most effective, and you're ready to plant." They've used chemical eradication in the past, but now try to avoid it, for ecological reasons. "It doesn't even work that well."

Choosing plants: Do a little research before you introduce a particular native species to your landscape. "Some plants are aggressive and not suited to an urban garden" because they spread too rapidly, Susan said.

Designing the garden: A prairie garden can easily look messy if it's not well-planned. "For visual appeal, it's best to mass plants -- planting 10 to 20 together," Susan suggested.
