Major U.S. stock indexes notched small gains on Monday, with six of the 10 sectors in the Standard & Poor's 500 index closing higher.

Investors considered the latest batch of corporate earnings, mergers, and the implications of an election victory in Greece by a party opposed to that country's bailout plan.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 6.10 points, or 0.03 percent, to 17,678.70

The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 5.27 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,057.09.

The Nasdaq composite added 13.88 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,771.76.

For the year:

The Dow is down 144.37 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 1.81 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 35.71 points, or 0.8 percent.
