HOW ALL-STARS ARE SELECTED

• Fans vote for nine American League starters, including a DH, and eight National League starters.

• Player balloting determines 17 reserves for the AL — five starting pitchers, three relievers and nine position players, including a DH — and 16 for the NL — five starting pitchers, three relievers and eight position players.

• The NL manager fills nine slots. The AL manager fills seven — two fewer because of the DH spots voted upon by fans and players. Each team in the league must have at least one player on the roster.

• The 34th and final spot on each roster comes from a list of five MLB-picked candidates. Fans vote on mlb.com.
