Type: Retail

Size (grocery store): 98,141 square feet

Area: 18 acres

Developer: Hy-Vee Inc.

Details: Even as grocery chain Hy-Vee celebrated the openings of its first two Twin Cities stores, it finalized plans for another new location in Savage, part of the next phase of its expansion into the local market.

The West Des Moines, Iowa-based company announced its push into the Twin Cities last year, promising to open multiple stores annually over an unspecified period of years. Hy-Vee's first two Twin Cities stores, in Oakdale and New Hope, each opened on Sept. 22. Land has been secured for two more stores in Lakeville and Brooklyn Park, with those openings planned for the second half of 2016.

Now add to that roster a long-vacant site at the Loftus Landing mixed-use development in Savage.

A final plat approved by the Savage City Council in September shows a 98,141-square-foot store with access from an extended Loftus Lane. Under the plans, the current landowner — a Woodbury limited liability company — would retain a 2.8-acre chunk of the 18-acre site for future development.

Like previously built and planned Hy-Vees, the Savage location would include a full-service restaurant with an outdoor dining area, a medical clinic/pharmacy and a separate, 4,500-square-foot combination convenience store/gas station featuring 16 pumps and an attached coffee shop.
