Details: Ten years after it was first planned, spinoff retail development near the Target store in Waconia's Interlaken development is finally happening.

When it was approved in 2006, the concept plan for Interlaken Village just south of Hwy. 5 envisioned up to seven retail buildings to be constructed north of the Target's parking lot. Then came the economic downturn.

Now, however, the neighborhood retail sector is back to pre-recession levels in many suburban areas and Waconia is benefiting. Plymouth-based Avalon Real Estate Group is proceeding with a 14,000-square-foot multitenant retail building on one of the seven sites set up in the original plan – the first commercial development at Interlaken Village since the opening of the Target store in 2008.

Avalon Group Principal Barbara Van Auken told city officials the firm doesn't build "on spec" and only proceeds with retail projects once tenants are lined up. That's now the case at Interlaken, she said, adding that half the building's space had signed leases with letters-of-intent in hand for the remainder.

The anchor tenant was revealed as an updated Domino's Pizza concept, which includes a more-open floor plan that allows customers to watch their pizzas being made. The shop is owned by Richard Dupont, who is relocating to Interlaken after 27 years in downtown Waconia.
