Details: The owners of Burnhill Plaza plan to raze the longtime Champps Americana sports bar at the Burnsville shopping mall and replace it with a pair of new buildings housing a Chick-fil-A restaurant and a Starbucks coffee shop.

CSM Corp., which has owned and operated the 139,000-square-foot strip mall since its construction in 1979, said it does not plan to renew the lease for the Champps franchise, which has operated at the site for 23 years. The lease runs through February, city documents indicate.

The 8,000-square-foot Burnsville Champps is one of four remaining in the Twin Cities after the bankruptcy of its parent firm last year.

In its place at the busy corner of County Road 42 and Burnhaven Drive, CSM is seeking city approvals to build a 4,791-square-foot Chick-fil-A and an 1,850-square-foot Starbucks, each with its own drive-through lane.

City planners supported the proposal partly because it would eliminate underused parking spaces at Champps and generate more density along the County Road 42 corridor. They praised the design elements of the two new buildings, which include the use of red brick that would complement a nearby TCF Bank branch.

CSM told the city it is planning to begin demolition the Champps building in May. That would be followed by four months of construction and a September opening for Chick-fil-A and Starbucks.

The Burnsville Planning Commission voted 4-1 last month to approve a planned unit development amendment allowing for the project.
