The Thorwood in Hastings has evolved from a single-family home built in 1880 into a hospital, a sixplex and a bed and breakfast. Owners Pam and Dick Thorsen, who had operated the renovated B&B since 1983, recently divided the historic French Second Empire mansion into three condos. Two of the condos, used as vacation rentals and for corporate housing, are for sale. The third-floor penthouse ($347,500) has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and three fireplaces. The remodeled kitchen features a vintage copper ceiling.

The luxury Lumber Baron condo ($547,500) with original plaster moldings, ceiling medallions and winding staircase, was previously the formal area of the 1880 home. The spacious four-bedroom unit has two fireplaces in the master suite and a private courtyard patio.

The Thorsens live in the third unit, which is the former servants' quarters. For the condo renovation, they retained the home's layout and many historical details.

"Even though it's three condos, it still feels like a mansion," said Pam.

Other features:

• Green benefits include a passive solar rooftop solarium over the penthouse, reconditioned original windows, efficient mechanical systems and rain barrels. Recycled materials were used throughout.

• Private elevators to each unit.

• Location, location, location: Hastings has several rivers and lakes and a 15-mile scenic bike trail.
