Highlights of the Senate and House versions of the bridge victim compensation bills

SENATE

$26.5 million fund.

$400,000 limit on each claim.

Claims would be considered and compensation offers made by a panel of three attorneys appointed by the chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

People who accept compensation offers would have to agree not to sue the state.

HOUSE

$40 million fund.

No limit on size of individual claims.

Claims would be considered and payouts proposed by a special master.

People who accept compensation offers would have to agree not to sue the state.

IN ADDITION

Under both the House and Senate versions, insurers would not be allowed to seek reimbursement through the state fund.

In both versions, the state could seek reimbursement under certain circumstances from third-party payments to victims. But the two versions differ on the circumstances.
