Highlights of the Senate and House versions of the bridge victim compensation bills

SENATE

• $26.5 million fund.

• $400,000 limit on each claim.

• Claims would be considered and compensation offers made by a panel of three attorneys appointed by the chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

• People who accept compensation offers would have to agree not to sue the state.

HOUSE

• $40 million fund.

• No limit on size of individual claims.

• Claims would be considered and payouts proposed by a special master.

• People who accept compensation offers would have to agree not to sue the state.

IN ADDITION

• Under both the House and Senate versions, insurers would not be allowed to seek reimbursement through the state fund.

• In both versions, the state could seek reimbursement under certain circumstances from third-party payments to victims. But the two versions differ on the circumstances.
