The sprint to the finish of the fall prep sports season begins this week with the girls' tennis and soccer state tournaments.

The girls' tennis tournament will conclude this week, but soccer is a two-week affair. The quarterfinals will be played this week at various sites in the metropolitan area, and the semifinals and championships will take place next week at St. Cloud State's Husky Stadium.

Girls' tennis

The state tournament begins Tuesday and runs through Friday, with Class 2A at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota and Class 1A at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Prior Lake earned the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A team tournament, with 18-time defending champion Edina seeded No. 2. Mahtomedi is the No. 3 seed, Eagan No. 4 and Rochester Mayo No. 5. Chanhassen's Hayley Haakenstad, now healthy after battling a leg injury for much of the year, is the No. 1 seed in the singles tournament, followed by No. 2 seed Isabella Lambert of Minnetonka, No. 3 Sophia Reddy of Edina and No. 4 Meagan Brown of Elk River.

The team tournament is not seeded in Class 1A, but the favorite is Blake, which was ranked No. 1 for much of the season before slipping to No. 2 after a late-season loss to rival Breck. The top two seeds in the Class 1A singles tournament are both Blake players: Junior Libby Rickeman is No. 1 and eighth-grader Arlina Shen No. 2.
