High school clay target state tournament preview

Clay target shooting team and individual champions will be determined Saturday in the high school state tournament held in Prior Lake.

What: Clay target state tournament

When: Saturday

Where: Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake

Who: Male and female high school trap shooters from 31 teams competing for the team championship. One hundred trap shooters will compete for individual honors.

When: Team competition begins at 9 a.m., individual competition at about 3:30 p.m.

Defending champions: Buffalo returns to defend its 2014 championship, won in the first year the Minnesota State High School League became affiliated with the tournament. Gust Lundeen of Dassel-Cokato returns to defend his 2014 individual title.

How it works: Teams qualified at the recent Minnesota State High School Clay Target League tournament in Alexandria, Minn. Trap shooters stand 16 feet behind the structure from which the targets are randomly thrown into the air within a specific arc range. In the individual portion of the event, each athlete will shoot four rounds of 25 targets for a potential perfect score of 100.
