Offensive lineman Artis Hicks will get his first taste as an unrestricted free agent tonight at 11:01 p.m. and he said Thursday afternoon that he has "mixed emotions."

"You never know what's going to happen," he said. "This is kind of unchartered territory for me."

Hicks, an eight-year veteran, has proven to be a valuable utility lineman for the Vikings. He can play tackle or guard on either side and has stepped in and played well in times of need.

"I'm excited to see what the market value is," he said.

Hicks said there are obviously a lot of factors that will factor into his decision, but he would like a chance to start.

"Everybody who plays in the NFL wants a chance to start," he said. "But a lot of it comes down to what is the best place for me."

Hicks hasn't ruled out re-signing with the Vikings.

"I like it there a lot," he said. "It's a great team and that nucleus is still intact. I think if Brett comes back they will be contenders again and even if he doesn't I think either Sage or Tarvaris can get the job done."

Hicks hopes that his versatility draws interest from teams. He's also known as a respected leader in the locker room.

"The more you can do, the more valuable you are," he said. "But you still have to wait to see what the market says."

Hicks joked that he won't be awake when free agency opens at midnight his time tonight..

"I have two kids at home who will make sure I'm asleep," he said, laughing. "I definitely won't be awake."

Etc.

-- The agent for Benny Sapp is expected to have another discussion with the Vikings this afternoon. However, it seems likely at this point that Sapp will become unrestricted tonight.
