After 84 minutes of action, we are still tied 1-1 in the Class 2A boys' hockey semifinal between Minnetonka and Hill-Murray. And yes, that means we are heading into historic territory.

They're resurfacing the ice right now as we prepare for the fourth overtime session. It was 51 minutes of regulation, plus an 8 minute overtime, then a 17 minute overtime, then another 8 minute session. Add it up, and it's 84 minutes. The longest game in state boys' hockey tournament history in terms of time was the famous 5-overtime game in 1996 between Duluth East and Apple Valley. Because periods were shorter back then, that game lasted 93 minutes and 12 seconds. So we are a little over nine minutes from breaking that mark as we head into the fourth overtime, which is another 17 minute, sudden-death session.

Fourth-seeded Hill-Murray has 43 shots on goal, while top-seeded Minnetonka has 27. Both teams have had chances in all the overtime sessions, including a disallowed Minnetonka early in the second overtime that was ruled to have been kicked in.

Still, it doesn't feel as though a goal is imminent. Both teams are still playing smart hockey and the game has been fairly even through the overtime sessions. The MSHSL has assured us this game will continue tonight until there is a winner. We'll see just how long that is. Buckle up!
