The head of Cargill's cotton business, a 29-year Cargill veteran, has left the company.

Doug Christie, president of Cargill Cotton since 2009, exited March 15, Cargill confirmed Tuesday.

The company declined to comment on why the Memphis-based Christie departed. The Financial Times first reported Christie's exit.

Minnetonka-based Cargill is one of the world's largest cotton traders, and the cotton industry has been in the dumps. As with many commodities, cotton prices have been low and stagnant.

Christie's departure comes as Cargill, one of the world's largest privately held companies, has been in the midst of an executive reorganization.

The company acknowledged in November that it was slimming down its leadership team, the most sweeping structural change in its senior management in about 15 years.
