The Timberwolves on Sunday waived swingman Lazar Hayward, one day before his non-guaranteed contract would have become guaranteed for the rest of the season.

NBA teams on Monday can begin signing free agents to 10-day contracts. The Wolves still could re-sign Hayward to one but more likely will consider signing or claiming players waived by other teams. They also must decide if they need a shooting guard/small forward type to help a depleted backcourt or a frontcourt player to compensate for Kevin Love's absence after he broke his shooting hand last week.

The Wolves have expressed interest in European swingman Mickael Gelabale, who has an NBA-out in his Spanish contract through Jan. 30. NBA teams waived Sam Young, Dominic McGuire, Josh Childress, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Samardo Samuels and Kris Joseph, among others, before Monday afternoon's deadline.
