BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau — A presidential decree issued Friday has announced that Guinea-Bissau will hold its next presidential election on Nov. 24.

Guinea-Bissau, a tiny country on Africa's Atlantic Coast has repeatedly been destabilized by military coups, the most recent of which took place in April 2012.

Since then, the nation of 1.5 million has been governed by a caretaker president, Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo, who was named to the post following an agreement between the regional bloc representing nations in West Africa and the military junta that staged the coup.

Nhamadjo had promised elections by the end of the year. He told reporters on Friday that he thought the date was realistic.
