A Minneapolis man pleaded guilty this week to second-degree murder in a north Minneapolis slaying last summer, while three others were charged with first-degree riot in another killing near a south Minneapolis bar last month.
Bryant Deshawn Elliott, 20, of Minneapolis admitted Monday to the single murder count in connection with the June 12 death of Daron Bolden. According to charges, Bolden and others were walking on 26th Avenue N. when Elliott approached and asked whether they had any marijuana. As they were talking, Elliott allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at Bolden's head. Bolden tried to knock the gun away when Elliott began shooting. Bolden tried to escape but collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Elliott is scheduled for sentencing Feb. 6. Prosecutors will ask for 27 years in prison, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office.
In a separate case, three men, two of them cousins, are charged with riot for the Dec. 20 death of Darnell Harris, who was shot in the head near Champions Bar on Lake Street.
Demarcus Cartez Quilling, 27, of St. Paul; Tavaris Jermaine McDaniel, 28, of St. Paul, and Renaldo Terez McDaniel, 28, address unknown, were charged by warrant and all were arrested within the last week. The McDaniels are cousins.
According to charges, police were sent to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where they found one man with a gunshot wound to his hand and Harris with a gunshot wound to the head. Police learned that the shooting happened outside Champions. A witness told police that Harris had walked from a parked car toward Champions when the defendants got into a sport-utility vehicle. Harris approached the SUV and then ran back to his car. The defendants then allegedly began shooting at the car Harris was in and chased them for 25 blocks, the charges said.
All three defendants were identified by witnesses and videos, and the investigation into the shooting continues. All three have made their first appearance and remain at the Hennepin County jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.
