The Gophers wrestling team, boosted by Kevin Steinhaus' victory over the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, knocked off Penn State 23-14 on Sunday in State College, Pa.

Steinhaus beat Quentin Wright 6-1, getting three takedowns in the victory.

The Gophers rebounded from a Friday night loss to Cornell in a weekend of competition against teams ranked in the nation's top five. Penn State is ranked second by intermatwrestle.com, the Gophers are ranked third, and Cornell is ranked fifth.

"This was great for the guys today," Gophers coach J Robinson said. "Overall it was our attitude that carried us today, and that is what will carry us throughout the season."

The Gophers won seven of the 10 matches against Penn State. Sonny Yohn's 4-3 victory over Morgan McIntosh at 197 pounds meant that Gophers heavyweight Tony Nelson needed only to avoid getting pinned. Instead he beat Cameron Wade 5-0.
