Titania Markland of the Gophers won the 600-meter run in the Big Ten men's and women's indoor track meet Saturday at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, finishing in 1 minute, 28.59 seconds. The Gophers, who finished fourth with 89 points, also got third-place finishes from Shanique Wright in the triple jump (41 feet, 5¾ inches) and Madeline Strandemo in the mile (4:42.24).

In the men's meet, the Gophers finished third with 72 points. Goaner Deng was second in the 800 (1:47.13), with the third-best time in program history. Also finishing second were Gianlo Ferretti in the weight throw (70-11¼) and Ryan Lockard in the high jump (7-2¼). Mitch Hechsel was third in the 600 (1:16.21) and Derek Wiebke third in the mile (4:09.31).

U softball wins two

The No. 21 Gophers softball team won twice in the Diamond Devils tournament in Tempe, Ariz., beating St. Francis 9-2 and Houston 5-3 to give coach Jessica Allister 200 career victories, all at Minnesota.

Sara Groenewegen hit a two-run homer and Maddie Houlihan a solo shot against St. Francis.

In the second game, the Gophers (9-5) broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth on Paige Palkovich's two-run homer.

U flexes diving might

Manny Pollard placed second (416.00), Dylan Zoe third (391.20) and Matt Barnard fourth (387.15) for the Gophers in platform diving in the Big Ten men's swimming and diving championships in West Lafayette, Ind., helping the team finish fourth with 919 points. Connor McHugh placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke and set a program record (1:54.08).

• The Gophers (4-2) edged Campbell 3-1 in a nonconference baseball game in Buies Creek, N.C., scratching for single runs in the fourth and fifth on sacrifice flies by Connor Schaefbauer and Dan Motl and getting an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh.

• The Gophers women's gymnastics team won the Best of Minnesota Meet with a 196.200, outscoring Winona State, Hamline and Gustavus Adolphus by more than 11 points. Minnesota's Lindsay Mable won three events.

• Yaroslav Pochinka won the vault (15.250), but the No. 4 Gophers men's gymnastics team lost at No. 1 Oklahoma 447.550-431.100.
