Gophers volleyball wins, soccer loses

The Gophers defeated Tulsa 25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 25-11 Friday in their first match of the Diet Coke Classic at the Sports Pavilion. Daly Santana and Adrianna Nora led Minnesota (5-1) in kills with 15 and 13, respectively.

The Gophers outhit Tulsa .287 to .112 and outblocked the Golden Hurricane 13-4.

Iowa State defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 in an earlier match.

U soccer team loses

Michigan's Taylor Timko scored four minutes into overtime to give the Wolverines a 2-1 victory over the Gophers on Friday in a Big Ten women's soccer opener in Ann Arbor. Her goal came on a free kick from 25 yards out.

Ani Sarkisian's goal in the ninth minute of play, on a rebound, gave Michigan a 1-0 lead, but the Gophers tied it on Rachel McCloskey's goal in the 73rd minute.

• Forward Rachael Bona and defenseman Rachel Ramsey will be the co-captains for the Gophers women's hockey team this season. Forward Meghan Lorence and defenseman Lee Stecklein will be the assistant captains.

• The Wild lost 6-4 to Columbus in the NHL Prospects tournament in Traverse City, Mich. Forward Ryan Walters, a former college player for Omaha invited to join the Wild team, scored two goals.
