The No. 2 Gophers swept West Virginia 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 on Friday night in the second match of the Diet Coke Classic, a two-day, four-team round robin. The victory came in their home opener and on the eve of a name change to the building they use for practices and games.

The Sports Pavilion will be renamed the Joel Maturi University Sports Pavilion, in honor of former Gophers athletic director, during a public ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Stephanie Samedy, a 6-2 freshman opposite hitter from Clermont, Fla., led the Gophers with 15 kills. The fifth-ranked player overall in the latest recruiting class by prepvolleyball.com also had seven digs.

Alexis Hart and Molly Lohman, two returning starters for Minnesota, had eight kills apiece. Lohman also had four blocks and hit .700. Samantha Seliger-Swenson, a third starter back, had 41 assists while libero Dalianliz Rosado had 13 digs.

Regan Pittman and Taylor Morgan added seven kills for the Gophers, who hit .323 to the Mountaineers' .160.

Hart, a sophomore outside hitter, had four kills on four attacks in the opening set, during which freshman Stephanie Samedy — the reigning Big Ten co-player of the week — struggled, getting just two kills and making an error on nine attacks.

Samedy had seven kills in the second set, which was close until the Gophers went on a 5-0 run on Samedy's serve to take a 13-7 lead. Kills by Hart and Samedy ended that set.

West Virginia was within 23-21 in the third set, which ended on Samedy' final kill.

Minnesota is 3-0 and has a 37-match home winning streak, going back to Oct. 25, 2014; the Mountaineers fell to 2-2.

The Gophers will play twice Saturday, facing Texas-San Antonio at 10 a.m. and Tennessee at 7 p.m.

Those pending opponents met in the opener of the Diet Coke Classic on Friday, with the Volunteers winning 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21.
