The Gophers volleyball team swept Maryland 25-15, 26-24 and 25-17 on Friday in a Big Ten match at the Sports Pavilion to keep the Terrapins winless in their new conference.

Daly Santana had 16 kills and hit .500 to lead the Gophers (12-4, 2-3), who improved to 6-2 at home.

The tight second set ended on a double block by Paige Tapp and Molly Lohman. Tapp added 11 kills and hit .400.

Sarah Wilhite got a kill for the Gophers on match point.

The Terrapins (7-9, 0-5) were led by Ashleigh Crutcher with 18 kills but she also committed seven errors and hit only .188.

Minnesota plays Rutgers in another home match at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Four coaches to be honored

The Minnesota State High School Coaches Association will induct four new members into its Hall of Fame on Saturday at its annual awards banquet at the Minneapolis Marriott West in St. Louis Park.

The inductees are former Apple Valley girls' track and field coach Geri Dirth, whose teams won 15 state championships; Bill Frantti, who coached St. Cloud Tech for 30 years and was known as the godfather of central Minnesota hockey; John Eberhart, whose Pine City girls' tennis teams won 280 matches from 1976 through 2000; and Ziggy Kauls, who won two state championships and 739 games as the Mounds View boys' basketball coach.

• The Gophers men's tennis team is competing in the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla., this weekend. Leandro Toledo of the Gophers is the third seed in the main singles draw, which starts Saturday. Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment were the second seeds in doubles.
