Gophers volleyball player Daly Santana was named Big Ten freshman of the week by the conference on Monday. The 6-1 outside hitter from Puerto Rico had 14 kills and hit .370 against Michigan last Wednesday and added nine kills and 13 digs in Saturday's comeback victory over No. 25 Michigan.

The Gophers have won five Big Ten weekly awards for volleyball this season. Santana is their first freshman of the week since Ashley Wittman in September 2010.

• The Gophers (14-3) remained at No. 10 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, released Monday. The Gophers play at Iowa on Friday and at No. 3 Nebraska on Sunday, the latter match to be televised live on ESPN2.

Etc. • With most teams still not having opened play, there was little movement in the latest United States College Hockey Online poll, with the Gophers remaining No. 2 behind Boston College. The Gophers open the season Friday night against Michigan State.

• The Gophers men's golf team is in eighth place out of 12 teams after two of three rounds at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in South Bend, Ind. The Gophers are at 21 over par, 20 strokes behind leader Michigan State.
