Gophers: Najarian or Goetz?

In an ideal situation, I would argue against hiring a businessperson to run a Big Ten athletic department.

Good piece by my colleague Chip Scoggins on Pete Najarian in today's paper.

In an ideal situation, I would argue against hiring a businessperson to run a Big Ten athletic department.

The Gophers' athletic department is the opposite of an ideal situation.

We keep hearing that the administration is leaning toward hiring Beth Goetz. I can't see anything in Goetz's resume that indicates she is prepared for or qualified for this job.

Let me ask this: Would any other Big Ten university hire someone of her qualifications to run their athletic department?

I say no.

Is Najarian the right person?

Again, not in an ideal situation. But let's simplify this job. The Gophers need someone who can hire good coaches and raise money.

Najarian would have a fighting chance at the former and a great chance at the latter.

I would like to think the University could hire a more qualified candidate. But it probably can't. Not with Eric Kaler running the show.

Najarian might be best candidate for a flawed situation.
