Kaia Parnaby pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight to lead Hawaii to a 3-0 victory over the Gophers on Friday in an NCAA softball regional tournament in Seattle.

Hawaii (44-11) bunched three of its six hits off Gophers starter Sara Moulton in the top of the fifth inning to score three runs with two outs. The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases on Sharla Kleibenstein's double and two walks. The first run scored on Keike Carlos' infield single, the next two on Jessica Iwata's single to center. Erica Meyer went 3-for-3 for the Gophers (35-18), but Kaitlyn Richardson had their only other hit against Parnaby, a senior lefthander from Australia who is 38-5.

The Gophers will play Portland State — a 2-1 first-round loser to Washington — at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in its second game of the double-elimination regional.

U baseball slumping

After taking an early 4-1 lead in the third inning, Illinois beat the Gophers 4-3 at Siebert Field in Big Ten baseball. It was the Minnesota's sixth loss in seven games.

Matt Halloran was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Gophers (29-20, 12-8 Big Ten). Andy Henkemeyer also had two hits and the other RBI. Gophers starter Alec Crawford pitched 4 ⅔ innings, giving up four runs, two earned. The Gophers also committed four errors. The Illini are 33-15 overall and 14-9 in the Big Ten.

U golfer in contention

Gophers senior Erik Van Rooyen is tied for sixth after two rounds of the NCAA regional at Ohio State. He is at 144 — four shots off the lead — after consecutive 1-over-par 72s.

• St. John's finished sixth in the NCAA Division III men's golf tournament in Destin, Fla., with a score of 1,199, one shot ahead of seventh-place Gustavus Adolphus. Each MIAC school also had a golfer in the top 10. Tyler McMorrow of the Gusties shot a closing 72 to tie for fifth at 290, Dennis Granath of the Johnnies finished with a 68 to tie for 10th at 292. … In the women's national meet, also in Destin, St. Olaf took 13th while Doyle O'Brien of St. Thomas shot a 77 for a 313 total, tying her for 10th.

• Minnesota State Mankato beat visiting Missouri Western 4-1 in 10 innings on the second day an NCAA Division II baseball regional. Stetson Olson's single drove in two runs in the 10th and he stole home on a delayed double steal for the third run. Senior Harvey Martin (8-0) pitched all 10 innings for the Mavericks. He threw 152 pitches, gave up seven hits and struck out seven.

• St. Thomas, ranked No. 2 nationally in Division III baseball, lost to Case Western of Cleveland 7-3 in the losers' bracket of the Midwest Regional in Whitewater, Wis. The Tommies (34-7) had only six hits in the loss, which ended their season.

• The St. Paul Saints defeated the New Jersey Jackals 5-1 at Midway Stadium. Saints starter Wes Roemer gave up one unearned run and three hits over the first seven innings and retired the last 17 batters he faced. Brandon Tripp was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Saints.
