According to a story in the South Bend Tribune, an outdoor college hockey doubleheader with the Gophers playing Wisconsin in one game and Notre Dame playing Miami (Ohio) in the other game has been set for Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 at Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears.

The campus of Notre Dame is adjacent to the city of South Bend and it is about 90 miles east of Chicago.

Wisconsin and Miami will likely be the two home teams. The story relies on Drew Russell, the associate vice president of Intersport, for its source. Intersport is organizing the event.

The Chicago Tribune also has a story quoting Russell, but it says the event is not quite set. It can be found here.

The Gophers released their 2012-13 schedule on Monday and it has them playing the Badgers in Madison, Wis. on Feb. 15-16.

Apparently, what seems likely to happen is the Gophers will play the Badgers on Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison and then have a travel day to get to Chicago. The driving distance is only about 150 miles, but the teams would probably want a practice on the outdoor ice before playing.

Wonder what the average temperature in the Windy City is on Feb. 17? About.com says the average high in February in Chicago is 33 degrees.

Soldier Field seats 61,500 for football.

Gophers coach Don Lucia wanted to play an outdoor game at TCF Bank Stadium in early January last season, but it didn't happen. Athletic administrators were worried the costs, primarily snow removal, would be too high. Turns out there was very little snow at the time.
