Junior Nicole Schammel scored two goals and added an assist Sunday for the Gophers women's hockey team in a 4-1 victory over Merrimack, giving the team a split of the weekend series at Ridder Arena.

Schammel's first goal opened the scoring 9 minutes, 41 seconds into the second period, and freshman Grace Zumwinkle made it 2-0 during a 5-on-3 power play with 4:19 left in the period. After Paige Sorensen, a junior from Wayzata, scored for Merrimack early in the third period, the third-ranked Gophers put the game away with Schammel's second goal and the first collegiate goal by freshman Taylor Wente.

Freshman Alex Gulstene, who made seven saves in relief in the Gophers' 4-3 loss Friday, got the victory. The Gophers outshot the Warriors 39-15.

"I really liked the bounce-back by our team after a tough loss the other night," coach Brad Frost said of the Gophers, who will be host to Ohio State on Friday and Saturday.
