Augusta, Ga.

We have an early-morning leader at The Masters. Jim Herman, who qualified for the tournament by winning the Shell Houston Open on Sunday, birdied the first two holes.

After four holes he was tied for the lead at minus-1.

It rained a bit last night, about a half-inch worth. It's sunny right now but winds are kicking up and could affect two aspects of the tournament. The winds could hurt high-ball hitters, and it could dry out the greens, making putting even more difficult.

Minnesota amateur Sammy Schmitz tees off at 10:16 a.m. Central time with Mike Weir and Cameron Smith.

Earlier this morning Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player hit the traditional ceremonial tee shots while Arnold Palmer watched from a chair on the tee box.

``I'm ooold," Nicklaus said.

The only prominent player seen to be in attendance for the ceremonial shots: Rickie Fowler.
