A young swimmer pulled from Cedar Lake in Minneapolis on Sunday afternoon after being underwater for an extended period died Monday, authorities said.

The 16-year-old girl from Minneapolis was found about 2 p.m. in roughly 10 feet of water, after apparently trying to swim to shore from a floating platform.

She died Monday afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center, said Hennepin County Sheriff's Maj. Tracey Martin. The girl's name will be released by the Hennepin County medical examiner, Martin said.

Not all Minneapolis beaches have lifeguards on duty. Last year, five of the 12 beaches had guards.

The Minneapolis Park Board decided this year to add two more, including at the beach where the girl drowned.

But because of a lifeguard shortage, the beach isn't expected to have guards on duty until June 16, said Dawn Sommers, spokeswoman for the Park Board.
