Madison, Wis. – Gadiva Hubbard scored 22 points and Carlie Wagner 20 as the Gophers defeated Wisconsin 71-61 on Wednesday night in Big Ten women's basketball.
It was Minnesota's 11th victory in a row over the Badgers and its fifth win in six games.
The Gophers (17-5, 6-3 Big Ten) shot only slightly better than Wisconsin, 40.6 percent to 38.5, but coach Marlene Stollings appreciated her team's defense.
"Especially in the first half, we were rock solid," she said in a postgame radio interview. "To hold them to 12 points in the first and second quarters — we were disrupting all over the floor.
"We forced 18 turnovers. … On the road, you've got to rely on defense at times."
Wagner made four three-pointers in the last 3 minutes, 10 seconds of the third quarter as the Gophers opened up a 57-43 lead. Wisconsin (9-15, 2-9) never got closer than 10 points after that.
"The three-ball, it looked really nice," Stollings said, referring to Wagner, a senior now within 10 points of 2,000.
Hubbard sparked a 14-0 run in the first half, which gave the Gophers a 29-12 lead. A three-pointer by her started that run and her layup ended it.
