Sure, David Cross has contributed to three "Alvin & the Chipmunks" movies, but when it comes to stand-up, he's never simply swung by to pick up a check. "David Cross Making America Great Again!," shot in Austin, Texas, this past April, is a shining example of how far the comic is willing to go to avoid familiar banter. His routine imploring that every schoolchild should carry a gun initially elicits gasps, but the laughs build during the inventive, thought-provoking routine until the audience realizes they're listening to a modern-day version of Lenny Bruce — only funnier.

If anyone could use some tranquility, it's Beth Stern, current wife of Howard Stern, and Mary Carillo, John McEnroe's former tennis partner. No wonder they've been lured into "Kitten Summer Games," an Olympics-inspired excuse to watch cuddly pets "engage" in volleyball, floor exercises and wrestling.

Stop making sense

Nominations for the strangest series on cable are now closed with all honors going to ... "The Eric Andre Show." This weekly deconstruction of late-night TV has no problem assigning a mole man to emerge from the floor to attack rapper T.I. during the fourth-season premiere or introducing a nearly naked human centipede as the musical entertainment. Guests seem genuinely thrown; so will you.

Case closed

"Inspector Lewis" heads into its 10th and final season with a new case set against the backdrop of Oxford University. It has been a good run for Lewis, although the series it was spun off of, "Inspector Morse," lasted from 1987 to 2000.
