Yesterday, there was a memorial service for the thirteen victims of the shooting rampage by U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan in Fort Hood, Texas.
ShaykhJ. Hashim Brown is an American Muslim convert to Islam who studiedIslam with Syrian scholars for almost a decade. He isthe current director of research at the Tabah Foundation based in the United Arab Emirates. He wrote the article, A Call to Reflection:

I welcome President Barack Obama statement that "no faith justifies these murderous and craven acts." In my world of Muslim activism, I hear voices of many scholars like Shaykh Brown, within the US and Middle East, speak against extremism and terrorism.
As aPalestinian-American who has experienced pain, sufferingand violence--like that experienced in Fort Hood--I caution people that power or force doesn't necessarily solve problems. Thereare many roads in the valley of impotence in the face of adversity, andmany lead to loss and perpetual suffering. The only road that has areal light at the end of the tunnel is the road of guidance and notvalidation.
At times, voices that validate your pain andsuffering seek to manipulate you in your most vulnerable state when youare hurting and unaware. Whereas voices of guidance seek to center andground you so you can see the roads ahead and choose the road to travelwith wisdom and reflection. It is for this reason that God guides usto show patience in times of adversity, so we can reflect and followthe road of guidance and not the seductive road of validation.
The attached video is part of a program, titled From Protest to Engagement, where Muslim scholars spoke to Muslim audiences regarding voices ofextremism. In this video, Habib Ali al Jifri explains to Muslims howto deal with feelings of oppression or impotence in the face ofadversity without resorting to force.
And the following story, Fort Hood Shooter No Hero: Scholars, on IslamOnline.net voices prominent scholars who insist the killing spree is unjustified under Islam.
As Shaykh Brown mentioned in his article, A Call to Reflection:

Nowords can remove the pain, grief and sorrow that the victims' familiesare feeling right now. I pray that God gives them the patience to dealwith this loss so they may further experience the glad tidings, openings and ease after this very dark hour of their lives.
