Former Cretin-Derham Hall quarterback Chris Weinke joins Volunteers as running backs coach

Former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Chris Weinke is joining Tennessee's staff as a running backs coach.

The former Cretin-Derham Hall and Florida State quarterback's contract runs through Jan. 31, 2020, and pays him $355,000 annually.

He spent the 2017 season with new Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt at Alabama while helping the Crimson Tide win a national title. Weinke was an offensive analyst, while Pruitt was defensive coordinator.

Weinke played with the Carolina Panthers from 2001-06 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2007. He was the Los Angeles Rams' quarterback coach from 2015-16 and spent five years as program director at IMG Academy.

Panthers keep Hurney

Marty Hurney will be calling the shots once again with the Panthers. Carolina rehired Hurney as its general manager. Hurney previously worked for the Panthers from 1998-2012, beginning as GM in 2002. He rejoined the Panthers last July as on an interim basis. The Panthers reinstated Hurney as interim GM last week after an NFL investigation found no wrongdoing into charges of harassment by his ex-wife.

... Free agent cornerback Vontae Davis met with the 49ers and Raiders about upgrading their secondaries. .

... Eagles receiver Alshon Jeffery underwent surgery to repair his right rotator cuff. Jeffery expects to be ready for the 2018 regular season opener.

NBA

Cuban fined $600,000

The NBA fined outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban $600,000 for comments about tanking during a podcast with Hall of Famer Julius Erving.

Commissioner Adam Silver said the fine was for "public statements detrimental to the NBA." The league said the podcast with Erving was posted Sunday.

"I earned it," Cuban said when asked about the latest fine. "I got excited talking to Dr. J and said something I shouldn't have."

Cuban said during the 30-minute interview that he told some of his players that "losing is our best option."

... The Blazers signed former Timberwolf Brandon Rush to a 10-day contract.
