Poetry from a baker

Danny "Klecko" McGleno has a story to tell, and it's one he's chosen to voice in a series of poems. In early 2018, he was still CEO of Saint Agnes bakery in St. Paul, a 30-year-old wholesale supplier of bread to numerous restaurants and hotels around the Twin Cities, which had landed a contract as a primary vendor for the Super Bowl in 2018. Then an immigration audit of his staff brought disturbing news: 23 employees, most of whom had worked for him for decades, lacked legal identification. The bakery closed, their lives changed and so did his. He writes about the harrowing days — and more — in verse in "Hitman-Baker-Casketmaker: Aftermath of an American's Clash With ICE" (Paris Morning Publications, $15). He will read his poetry Saturday at 1 p.m. at the East Side Freedom Library (1105 Greenbrier St., St. Paul, eastsidefreecomlibrary.org). Free.

Hungry on the big screen

Several films related to food, including two mentioned here, will be part of the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (mspfilm.org/festivals/mspiff), with showings at the St. Anthony Main Theatre (115 SE. Main St., Mpls.). "The Cake General" tells the tale of a Swedish man who wants to bring some respect to his town by creating the biggest sandwich cake — smorgastarta — in the world. The Swedish film runs on April 12 at 4:10 p.m. and April 13 at 7 p.m.

"The Golden Harvest" (85 minutes) will be shown April 13 at 9:45 a.m. and April 15 at 4:50 p.m. The film has Minnesota roots; filmmaker Alia Yunis, a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Journalism, was partly inspired by childhood memories of consuming olive oil in White Bear Lake with her immigrant family. Her tale is part of 6,000-year-old story of the impact of olive oil on the people of the Mediterranean. Find a trailer at goldenharvestfilm.org.
