Which recreational sport goes best with drinking? Popular opinion would point toward beer pong. Athletically challenged bargoers might favor something less engaging, such as darts or quarters. Foosball, on the other hand, is a game that requires skill and your undivided attention. And while it might seem like a lost tradition, don't fret: Twin Cities foosball is alive and well.

MORTIMER'S

2001 Lyndale Av. S., Mpls.

Quantity: Six foosball tables, plus 11 pinball machines, four pool tables, air hockey and darts.

You can scrounge every far-flung corner of the Twin Cities, but as far as foosball goes (it doesn't go all that far, actually), there isn't a single place that compares to Mortimer's. Located on the outskirts of Uptown, the bar features a total of six traditional foosball tables. But to the most ardent players, this is no secret. From seasoned professionals to weekend hobbyists, the bar manages to attract a wide swath of players from all over the state -- and sometimes the nation -- on a regular basis, reports manager Neil McGregor.

Every Wednesday at 8 p.m. Mortimer's hosts DYP (draw-your-partner) tournaments as well as pickup games on Friday nights. However, it'd be wise to arrive early because the line almost always extends out the door.
