An area of low pressure brought locally heavy rainfall to the southerncoastline of Spain, including Costa del Sol from Friday night into Saturdaynight, causing widespread flooding and travel problems.Rainfall amounts surpassed 5 inches in many locations including Front Airportin Gibraltar, which reported 7.26 inches of rainfall.

The heavy rain was also responsible for a 51-car pileup on the A7, which is amajor highway that runs from Algeciras in southern Spain to Barcelona in thenortheast. Another accident near Malaga, claimed the lives of three people.

The heavy rainfall resulted in house and street flooding across much of theregion and in the town of Estepona, the sewers flooded into the streets.

Dry weather returned to southern Spain on Sunday; however, another storm systemwill bring the threat for locally heavy rainfall on Monday, which could onceagain lead to flooding problems. Light rain and scattered showers will continueinto Tuesday and Wednesday.
