The site FiveThirtyEight.com, which you probably know more from checking it once every 12 seconds for election updates, does not merely #sticktopolitics.

Instead, Nate Silver and his crew also delve into the world of sports forecasting (among other things). If you believe in their models and you believe in the Timberwolves, their NBA forecast is a harmonious convergence of those two things.

The site has the Wolves pegged for 46 victories this season, which would give them one of the 10 best records in the league. For their trouble, they are given a 72 percent chance of making the postseason — odds that would be even better if they played in the East instead of the West, the latter of which has eight of the 10 projected best teams in the league.

The forecast is based on 50,000 simulations, which I think both the league and players' union would agree is excessive if really played out on the court instead of inside a computer.

That said, the real season will be played on the court. The Wolves jumping from 16 wins (in 2014) to 29 last year to 46 this year wouldn't be outlandish, but it would outpace other predictions. For instance, Vegas has the Wolves' over-under season win total at 41.5 — so if you really believe in this team and 538, maybe hop a flight or find a friend?

FiveThirtyEight even gives the Wolves a 2 percent chance of winning the NBA title. As if we needed any reminders, though, Golden State dominates the projections: 68 wins, a better than 99 percent chance of making the playoffs and a staggering 55 percent chance of winning the NBA title. Next in line? The defending champion Cavaliers at 11 percent.

Given that the Wolves are still young and going up against several very good teams in the West — not to mention one that is potentially historically great again — the prudent move is to remain in wait-and-see mode with this team.
