Brett Favre had a large bag of ice attached to his throwing arm as he addressed reporters following Thursday's practice at Winter Park.

The quarterback said he was "not overly concerned about" the soreness but it's believed he is dealing with tendinitis in his right elbow for at least the second time in his career. Favre missed the final three preseason games in 2000 because of the issue but returned to starter the opener that year against the Jets.

Asked if the elbow was giving him problems, Favre said: "A little bit. ... Just based on my 20 years, there's been little things that nag here and there. Of course, that's the throwing arm, so a little bit more of a concern. I've probably iced more in the last three weeks than I have in my whole career. I don't want to say I'm getting overly mental, but I want to be crisp."

The Vikings put Favre on a practice "pitch count" last season but have not continued that plan this year. Favre missed training camp for the second consecutive year as he tried to decide whether to return for a 20th NFL season. The issue is that with Randy Moss having just joined the team and Greg Camarillo and Hank Baskett also being late arrivals, Favre has been trying to get on the same page with new receivers.

"I want to be smart about it, but I do need the work," Favre said. "It's not like I'm throwing to these guys for 10 years. Brad [Childress] and I and Darrell [Bevell] and I, we've talked about how many reps to take and things like that. But I've needed to take as many as I can for obvious reasons. I'm trying to be smart about it. I'm not too overly concerned about it right now."

Favre was listed on the Vikings' first injury report of the week because of elbow and right ankle issues. The latter comes from the offseason surgery he had to repair the ankle. Favre did not miss any practice time Thursday as the Vikings began preparing for Monday night's game against the Jets.

A surprise addition to the report was rookie cornerback Chris Cook, who again is being bothered by soreness in his right knee. Cook, who did not practice Thursday, tore the meniscus in the knee in the preseason and had arthroscopic surgery that kept him out for the first two games.

He returned in Week 3 to play against the Detroit Lions and was used as the left cornerback in the nickel defense. Veteran Antoine Winfield would then slide inside.

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring) and center John Sullivan (calf) were limited in Thursday's practice. Left tackle Bryant McKinnie (finger) did not miss any of the session.
