Although Brett Favre suffered a concussion in the second quarter of the Vikings' 40-14 loss to the Bears on Monday night, the quarterback doesn't appear to be headed to injured reserve. That means there is still a chance he could play in the Vikings' final two games against the Eagles and Lions. "I don't think so at this stage," Vikings interim coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday when asked if he might place Favre on IR and thus end his season and likely his career. "He's proven time and time again that he's capable of coming back and playing again so I don't think so." Favre, 41, played Monday night despite having been listed as being "out" of the game on Saturday. Favre was upgraded to "questionable" on Monday and then played, completing five of seven passes for 63 yards with a touchdown and an interception before Joe Webb took over. Asked if there was a concern that Favre is having trouble protecting himself, or that his offensive line isn't capable of adequately providing pass protection at this point, Frazier said: "You have to be aware of that potential risk and we have to weigh those. But on that one hit that he did have [there] really wasn't a chance for him to avoid [it]. The [player] was on him so fast, he just had no way of protecting himself when he hit the ground. That's always a possibility, but that's a risk even if he had not had any previous injuries. Just the way that occurred." The NFL has cracked down on players returning too soon from concussions this season as well, meaning there appears little chance Favre could return after a short week. "When you look at the history it's rare it seems today that guys are able to come back on a short week," after suffering a concussion, Frazier said. "So, you wouldn't think that would be possible. But there have been other things you didn't think were possible with Brett." Frazier said if Favre can't play Sunday against the Eagles that Webb will get the start. Peterson getting better Adrian Peterson sat out Monday night because of a bruised knee but Frazier said the Pro Bowl running back is "improving." That , of course, is far from a guarantee that Peterson will play Suday. Other injury updates:

  • Middle linebacker E.J. Henderson suffered a sprained finger Monday but was able to return.
  • Safety Madieu Williams has a concussion and will be day-to-day this week. He took a knee to the head from Bears running back Matt Forte in the second quarter and it wouldn't be surprising if he missed a game.
  • Defensive end Ray Edwards returned after missing two games because of a high right ankle sprain. He was able to finish the game and Frazier called that a "plus for us," adding, "we should have him this week, we hope."

Safety concerns With Tyrell Johnson (knee) and Jamarca Sanford (concussion) already missing and Williams having to leave the game, the Vikings were down to Husain Abdullah and backup Eric Frampton at the safety positions on Monday night. "It was a little hairy," Frazier said. "All of a sudden you've got Framp and Abdullah in the game but who is up next? We talked about some things in practice and how we'd go and we very well may be in that position again this week. We have to have some alternatives. Right now that alternative would have having one of our corners move to safety. That's all we have left. So we switch somebody and move them back to the safety position if something were to happen to Abdullah or Frampton or if Jamarca's not able to go for some reason." Frazier said "a couple of different scenarios" have been discussed but he did not want to go into any detail at this point. Help on the way? The Vikings put the wheels in motion on Monday to sign quarterback Rhett Bomar (Sam Houston State) off the New York Giants practice squad but the move is still not official. "I'm going to go back and talk to [Vikings vice president of player personnel] Rick Spielman and the rest of our scouting staff and just find out where we are and what we're thinking about doing with the quarterback position and some it depends on what happens with Brett as well," Frazier said. "We'll discuss that when I leave here actually." Update: The Vikings' signing of Bomar has moved on the NFL wire and is now official. R.J. Archer was placed on waivers a day after being signed off the practice squad. He likely is headed back to the Vikings' practice squad.
