A motorist involved in a crash that killed another driver at a south metro intersection Friday morning was captured after fleeing on foot and taking off his clothes as he ran, police said.

Officers caught the man hiding naked in the basement of a townhouse he broke into on the 15800 block of Gooseberry Way, a short distance from the crash that occurred about 8:30 a.m. on Cedar Avenue at County Road 46 on the border of Lakeville and Apple Valley, said Apple Valley Police Capt. Nick Francis.

The suspect, who has not been identified, locked the doors of the townhouse and briefly prevented the residents from opening the door for police. There were two small children inside at the time. Officers eventually got in and took the suspect to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with unspecified injuries, said Lakeville Police Sgt. Jay Castonguay.

According to police, the suspect was driving west on County Road 46 and ran a red light at Cedar Avenue. The suspect's vehicle collided with a motorist heading south on Cedar. The male driver of that vehicle was killed, Castonguay said.

Two other vehicles were involved in crash. One person was injured and given medical attention at the scene, police said.

As the State Patrol sent a reconstruction team to the assess the scene, police in Lakeville and Apple Valley police looked for the suspect. The suspect "made it a few blocks" into the Apple Valley neighborhood on the northeast side of the intersection. Witnesses told police that as he ran, the suspect took off his sweatshirt, then ditched other articles of clothing.

"It's not uncommon for a suspect to drop a sweatshirt and try to change their identity," Francis said. "But to take all their clothes off is quite odd."

It was also odd that the suspect ran into a townhouse where a man, woman and two children ages 2 and 6 months old were home. The homeowners called 911 to report the intruder, who is expected to face first-degree burglary and false imprisonment charges, Francis said.

The residents were not hurt.

The intersection of Cedar and County 46 was closed for several hours but reopened before noon, police said.
