Explosion damages Fridley apartment building

October 20, 2015 at 11:32PM

Residents of a Fridley apartment building are in need of a new place to stay after an explosion damaged the seven-unit structure early Tuesday, Fridley fire officials said.

All the residents in the building on the 5900 block of 2½ Street NE got out safely after an explosion in a basement utility room just after 3 a.m. One resident stepped on glass and suffered minor injuries while exiting, said Capt. Mike Spencer.

Residents will not be allowed back in until a structural engineer can inspect the building and determine if it is safe, Spencer said.

The Red Cross is on the scene providing assistance.
